Competition
Dyffryn Conwy Paddlers members are involved in all
three of the major disciplines of canoe racing, all have their
own International Canoe Federation world championships, with
sprint racing being an Olympic sport.
Sprint racing can be compared to track
athletics with competitors racing head to head in buoyed lanes
down a straight line course over distances of 200m, 500m and
1000m.
Marathon racing is the cross country
racing of canoeing with mass start races of between 4 and 12
miles which may include weir shoots and portages where you have
to carry your boat around obstacles.
Wild water racing is canoeings equivalent
of downhill ski racing where competitors start at 1 minute intervals
and race down a white water river against the clock. DCP usually
organise the British open wild water racing championships on
the nearby river Trywryn at Bala.
As
well as these ICF recognised disciplines, DCP paddlers also
compete in
Triathlons and multisport events
which often have canoeing leg in them, and Sea
kayak races which are growing in popularity in the UK.
The club also runs Friday evening timetrials
throughout the summer, and anyone is welcome to come along and
race these.
